Achievements in 2021-2022

Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition 2021-2022

Division 1 Finals Champion

On December 16th and 17th 2021, the Junior and Senior Debate teams held their HKSSDC Term 1 Finals competition against Diocesan Girls’ School and PLK Centenary Li Shiu Chung Memorial College respectively and were awarded as winners. The senior team members through all three rounds include Diana Gamboa of F.5T, Audrey Kiang of F.5T, Cheryl Chan of F.4T, Valerie Chan of F.4T, and Yashica Vijaykumar of F.4A. The junior team members through all three rounds include Tianna Lim of F.2T, Stella Wong of F.3A, Evana Or of F.3U, and Nafha Sabeer of F.3P. Their excellent results will carry on over to the Term 2 debates where they will compete in the HKSSDC Grand Finals in July 2022. Congratulations to both English Debating Teams!

Division 2 Grand Finals Champion

On June 17th and July 15th, the Junior and Senior Debate teams held their HKSSDC Term 2 Grand Finals match against Renaissance College and Victoria Shanghai Academy respectively. The Senior Team was awarded Champion and the Junior Team was awarded 1st Runner Up. 

The senior team members through all three rounds include Bernice Kwan of F.5T, Veronique Liu of F.5T, Diana Gamboa of F.5T, Kate Lee of F.4A, Cheryl Chan of F.4T, Valerie Chan of F.4T, and Yashica Vijayakumar of F.4A. The junior team members through all three rounds include Tianna Lim of F.2T, Jamie Ng of F.3S, Stella Wong of F.3A, Evana Or of F.3U, and Nafha Sabeer of F.3P. Congratulations to both English Debating Teams for their brilliant performances and results!

Hong Kong Bar Association Debating Competition 2022 

1st Runner Up

We are pleased to announce that our school was the First Runner Up in the Grand Finals of The Hong Kong Bar Association Debating Competition 2022 (English Division), which was held at The Hong Kong University on 9 July 2022. 

The competition is organized by the Standing Committee on Young Barristers of The Hong Kong Bar Association. All motions focused on controversial socio-economic issues, including the right to be forgotten, corporate manslaughter, selling cryptocurrencies to retail investors, and suspending IP protection for Covid-19 vaccines. This year, a total of 14 schools participated in the competition. We were up against Maryknoll Convent School in the Quarter-Finals, Diocesan Girls’ School in the Semi-Finals, and Diocesan Boys' School in the Grand Finals. 

Students who made it possible for our school to be in the Grand Finals included 5T Lauren Cooke, 5T Diana Gamboa (Best Debater in both Grand Finals and Semi-Finals), 5T Audrey Kiang, 5T Hillary Yue, 4T Cheryl Chan, 4T Valerie Chan (Best Debater in the Quarter-Finals), and 4A Kate Lee.

Achievements in 2020-2021

Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition 2020-2021

Division 1 Round 1 Champion

Our senior debating team members—Serene Kwok from F.5S, Lauren Cooke from F.4A, and Diana Gamboa from F.4L—earned laurels with their win in the Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition (Division 1 Round 1) conducted on Zoom following the enhanced format on 30th September, 2020, and Diana was named the best speaker. The team on the opposition debated on the motion THW pay interns the minimum wage. Succeeding the victory of the senior team and debating on the same motion on the affirmative side in the said competition, our junior debating team comprising Cheryl Chan from F.3T, Valerie Chan from F.3T and Yashica Vijayakumar from F.3A won the debate on 5th October, 2020 with excellent delivery and compelling arguments. Valerie was awarded the best speaker. Congratulations to both teams

Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition 2020-2021

Division 1 Round 2 Champion

On 11th November, 2020, our senior debating team members comprising Angela Chan from F.4S, Agatha Tsang from F.4S and Suyasha Mohan from F.5S clinched the debate on the challenging motion THW return national treasures to their country of origin. The debate followed the enhanced format and was conducted on Zoom. On the proposition side, our team presented strong arguments on how returning national treasures to their country of origin can open up cultural dialogues. It was a close debate in which the students demonstrated a high calibre to unpack and rebut the opposition’s arguments, and were glad to have obtained tremendously valuable feedback from the adjudicator and learned from the opposing team which performed just as well. Congratulations!

On 18th December, 2020, our junior debating team members comprising Kate Lee from F.3A, Evana Or from F.2A and Gladys Lau from F.1T won the debate on the motion THW return national treasures to their country of origin. The debate on Zoom was of the enhanced format. On the opposition side, the team presented solid and convincing arguments, effective rebuttals, and strong cohesion. The students gained constructive feedback from the adjudicator and reaped from their first public debating experience. Congratulations!

Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition 2020-2021

Division 1 Finals Champion

On 5th March, 2021, our senior debating team which comprises of Lauren Cooke from F.4A, Diana Gamboa from F.4L, and Suyasha Mohan from F.5S clinched the Championship in the finals of term one in the Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition. The debate of the enhanced format was held on Zoom and the motion was THW condition foreign aid on proper establishment of women’s rights. As the Opposition, our team presented eloquent arguments surrounding how conditionalizing foreign aid would restrict the development of women’s rights. The adjudicator offered the team valuable comments after what was deemed a very close debate. Congratulations!
